About three years ago I started volunteering at Wednesday night Homework Club. Back then, on a full night we might see 12 kids. This year…we average around 55 kids on Wednesdays. What a blessing it has been to watch regulars bring friends, who then become regulars and bring more friends. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to either volunteer or work in multiple youth-serving organizations. However, never have I seen a group of kids as devoted and happy to be a part of something as the kids at Homework Club. Kids and leaders alike set aside time each week to be a part of this Casino Road family and the joy it brings is encouraging.
I have the privilege of providing a craft project for the kids each week before dinner. In all honesty, it can be a challenge. Trying to figure out a craft that will appeal to a wide range of ages and to both boys and girls isn’t always easy. However, it has been interesting to watch the kids over the years and how they approach craft time. I can think of a few particular kids that are quickly approaching the teenage years and are less interested in doing the craft and more interested in helping set up or helping younger kids. There are often nights that I simply get everyone started and then step back as they all help one another. Watching them laugh together and take pride in finishing a craft project is just one of the reasons I can’t wait to get to club each week.

Over the past six months, Casino Road Ministries (CRM) has experienced tremendous growth. Homework Club at South Everett Foursquare continues to grow and reach out to more children in the area. We’ve been able to work with 40 to 45 children each Wednesday night. Each Wednesday night these children receive homework help, eat a warm meal, play educational games and develop friendships with adults and other children alike.
We’ve started a homework assistance program at the Bluffs, an apartment complex on Casino Road, on Tuesday afternoon. The club started off slow with one child attending for one month. Now, thirteen elementary and junior high students participate in club. Since CRM has been consistently involved in the Casino Road community, the manager has decided to give CRM space to hold homework club and develop other programs on their property. We’ve had other managers contact us to start homework clubs on their properties. Our hope is to expand our homework club ministry and plant clubs at other apartments pending funding and volunteers.
Some of our children have come to think of Kids’ Club as more than a place to hear bible stories and have fun. Whenever a child from Kids’ Club sees me at Fred Meyers, Horizon Elementary or the Boys and Girls club, I hear the same question, ‘Is church today? I think its awesome our children see gathering while learning how to develop a life-long relationship with Jesus and being positive examples at the Boys and Girls Club on Monday nights as their ‘church’ time. They’ve learned what so many adults forget at times that the church is not a building, but a gathering of people who are dedicated to learning how to follow Jesus.

We had 12 children registered for children’s camp last week, but on the day we left for camp we added another boy. Joseph was at Starbucks getting us a drink when the barista asked him what he was doing for the day. He told her we were taking children to camp then she asked if her son could come too. So we signed him up at 9:30 am.
(The kids paused for a picture before we had lunch at Round Table Pizza.)
(This is where the boys slept during camp.)

We have 19 children signed up and ready to go to summer camp. And thanks to your generosity and support we are able to provide funds to help each child.
At camp, our children will be able to do so many exciting things like: hiking, swimming, tennis, basketball, sliding down a 30-foot slip-n-slide, canoeing, group games and so much more. Each night children will gather for Chapel and share a powerful time together to worship Jesus and hear stories from the Bible. The camp theme verse is Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” Every day, children will open the Bible and explore stories of how God’s love never changes.

Drugs, prostitution, gangs, shootings, poverty, violence, mental illness and hopelessness. This describes the life of many children living on a two-mile strip in Everett called Casino Road. Over 70% of these children are living below the poverty line and over one-third are transitional bi-lingual.
This neighborhood will change for the better. I believe the catalyst for this change will be the children. Simple acts of kindness towards kids can give families hope. We believe if we instill the value of compassion and charity in the children, they will teach these values to their peers and eventually their own children.
Casino Road Ministries has grown in the last five years, from less than a dozen kids meeting in a local apartment complex, to close to 100 children and over two dozen volunteers meeting on Casino Road after hours for Kids Club or Homework Club. We strive to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the children entrusted to us through:
The Board and I are asking for your help. We need resources to continue serving the children. Our current needs are:
Any gifts, no matter how large or small, will have a direct impact on the lives of these children. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Todd McNeal
Board Chairman

Casino Road Ministry came about through an intersection of circumstances, including an internship, the needs of the kids in this area, and my own love for youth. Throughout, God has steered the ministry in His own direction and made it what it is today. The future of the Ministry also remains in His hands.
The seeds for Casino Road Ministry were sown in 1999 when I went to intern for Youth For Christ. The work was to be two-fold: to start a youth group as youth pastor at Temple Baptist Church and to assist the kids residing at nearby apartment complex. The hope, of course, was to see the apartment complex kids make a transition to the church. Things didn’t quite work out as planned. But God knew what He was doing. And while the youth group never took flight, and I left Temple after my one-year stint, things were just beginning to get cooking at the apartment.
My work at the apartment complex was centered around a homework club. Kids would come and get help with reading, writing and math – that is, when they weren’t kicking and throwing things at my car. Some days were rough. But some strong bonds were being formed. I recall eating out with a group of six teens at Wendy’s restaurant. As we ate – and as I yelled at one of them to stop throwing food and another to quit running laps – I felt my heart burn. Here was a group of challenged kids. They were wild, misbehaved, educationally challenged and rude. Many of their home lives were turbulent. And yet I felt for them. God was opening my eyes. Others had walked out on these kids; I didn’t want to be another one to walk away. I prayed that I would love them like the Father, that I would encourage them every time I was with them, and that God would use me to be a light to their families.
A few years later, as this first group of teens started to move on, I found myself still returning to the apartment complex, sensing God wasn’t done with me and this place quite yet. After praying and getting permission from the complex’s managers, I decided to start a reading club. The idea was to expose children to the Bible in the form of stories, while also diving into some good Dr. Seuss books and helping with homework. Casino Road Ministry was formally founded in January 2008. Today, Casino Road Ministry works with children ages 5 to 11 through two different clubs at two apartment complexes on Casino Road. One club helps kids with homework, while the second teaches them about Christ and how to follow Him.
Five years later, here we still are… praise be to God!
